Electric Snow Melting Systems Types of Applications:
For store-front businesses, a snow-free sidewalk and entry can increase walk-in business by increasing accessibility. It also eliminates the need for snow-removal and unsightly and inconvenient piles of snow around entrances and driveways. By using a snow-melting system, the covered area also remains dry, creating a safer surface for pedestrians. In addition to these benefits, snow-melting also eliminates the need for application of salts and chemicals that can damage surfaces - some of which are environmentally hazardous. Electric snow melting offers a cost-effective means of snow removal compared to hydronic systems when coupled with a snow sensor, a low-temperature thermostatic control, and a remote slab temperature-sensing bulb to limit energy waste from excess heating capacity during light-snow conditions. Electric snow-melting systems utilize cables that heat up when current is applied to them - like a stove element only much less intense. When these electric cables are embedded into the surface to be heated (concrete or asphalt), the radiating heat warms up the entire slab of material. This heated surface then
simply melts the snow or ice. With the incorporation of a good control
system, there never needs to be an accumulation of snow or ice! The
sketch below shows a typical electric snow-melting cable installation with
the power box embedded in a nearby exterior wall.
Axiom Engineering will utilize
application software to design an electric snow-melting system specifically
tailored to the geographic location and snow densities of your client's
building or business. We'll also design the control system best-suited
to the local environment to minimize energy waste.
